Understanding Periodic Limb Movement

PLM is a neurological sleep disorder where your legs—and sometimes arms—move involuntarily and repeatedly during sleep. These movements usually happen every 20 to 40 seconds and can last for minutes or even hours throughout the night.
Unlike restless legs syndrome (RLS), which causes discomfort before sleep and involves a conscious urge to move, PLM happens while you’re asleep, often without you knowing.

Could PLM Be Disrupting Your Sleep?

  • Repetitive leg or foot twitching during sleep
  • Feeling tired despite a full night in bed
  • Frequent nighttime awakenings
  • Difficulty falling back asleep after waking
  • Poor concentration or memory during the day
  • Bed partner reports jerky leg movements
  • Unexplained insomnia or sleep maintenance issues

Note: PLM may occur on its own or alongside other sleep conditions like restless legs syndrome or sleep apnea.
